Slaying My Last Dragon (Fruit) Of The Season

I’ve slayed my last Dragon (Fruit) of the season.  :-(   I LOVE Dragon Fruit!  Fortunately, there is a farm nearby that grows these beauties.  Our local farmers market carries them, as well.

Such a beauty in the rough.  Hidden within its strange looking exterior, is this exotic, refreshing and tasty treat.  The color is exquisite!  The dragon fruit flesh can be white, red, or magenta all to varying degrees dependent upon variety.  They are among the many wonder fruits that are said to provide multiple health benefits.  In addition, dragon fruits help protect the environment because they absorb carbon dioxide at nighttime, and then release oxygen to purify the air.

Dragon fruit is low in calories and offers numerous nutrients, including Vitamin C, phosphorus, calcium, plus fiber and antioxidants.

Dragon fruits do not contain cholesterol, saturated fat and trans fat, so regular consumption will help manage your blood pressure and control your cholesterol levels.  They contain phytoalbumins, which have antioxidant properties that help prevent the formation of cancer cells.  The seeds of dragon fruits are high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids) that reduce triglycerides and lower the risk of cardiovascular disorder.  Not having complex carbohydrates, they can be broken down easily by the body.  They are also known to increase the excretion of heavy metal toxins from the body.

Dragon fruit tastes wonderful! – with crisp, watery flesh, the flavor is somewhere between a kiwi and watermelon.  Until next dragon (fruit) season … I will miss you, my Pretties!
